Duncan Phyfe Chair

This is a rare set of mahogany lyre-back chairs made originally by The Kittinger Company in 1929 as exact reproductions of the famous original Duncan Phyfe design. The chair was still reproduced by Kittinger as late as the 1940s. The chair features a Lyre-Back with a sweep of curved line from the top rail to the floor. Phyfe's interpretation of the acanthus leaf is hand carved on the legs. The "strings" of the lyre are antiqued brass.
Duncan Phyfe, one of the most famous American Cabinetmakers, operated a shop in New York from the 1790s until his retirement in 1847. The original design of this chair is representative of his finest work. Original examples of this Duncan Phyfe designed chair can be seen at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan. See matching side chairs 2011G.
